When we first started creating Zojee, Jonathan and I knew one thing for certain: we didn't want to create skincare filled with ingredients just because they were trending.
As parents, we'd spent countless hours researching sensitive skin, reading ingredient labels and trying to understand what actually helps support healthy skin. The more we learnt about the skin barrier and skin microbiome, the more we realised that great skincare isn't about having the longest ingredient list. It's about choosing ingredients that work in harmony with your skin.
That's what led us to postbiotics.
Today, postbiotics are at the heart of both our Head-to-Toe Wash and our I-Got-You Cream. They're one of the ways we've thoughtfully designed our products to help support sensitive family skin, every day.
What are postbiotics?
Your skin is home to millions of beneficial microorganisms that make up what's known as the skin microbiome. Think of it as your skin's own protective ecosystem, helping to keep your skin balanced and functioning at its best.
Postbiotics are beneficial ingredients created through the fermentation of these microorganisms. Unlike probiotics, which contain live bacteria, postbiotics are stable, making them well suited to everyday skincare.
They're designed to work with your skin, helping to support its natural barrier rather than disrupting it.
Why does the skin microbiome matter?
Healthy skin starts with a healthy skin barrier.
Your skin barrier works together with the skin microbiome to help keep moisture in and external irritants out. When that barrier becomes disrupted, skin can feel dry, tight or uncomfortable.
Everyday things like frequent washing, changing weather, air conditioning, heating and even long baths can all affect the skin barrier.
That's why we believe supporting the skin barrier should be the foundation of every skincare routine.
If you'd like to learn more, read our Gentle Guide to Sensitive Skin in Children, where we explain how the skin barrier works and why it's so important for sensitive skin.
How do postbiotics support sensitive skin?
Postbiotics work alongside your skin's natural processes to help support healthy-looking skin.
As part of a gentle skincare routine, postbiotics can help:
- Support the skin barrier.
- Help maintain a balanced skin microbiome.
- Support skin hydration.
- Leave skin feeling comfortable after cleansing.
- Complement other barrier-supporting ingredients like ceramides and niacinamide.
While no single ingredient is responsible for healthy skin, we believe thoughtfully combining ingredients creates formulas that work beautifully together.
Postbiotics in our Head-to-Toe Wash
Our Head-to-Toe Wash contains Lactobacillus Ferment Filtrate, a postbiotic ingredient chosen to support the skin while gently cleansing.
We paired it with ingredients that help keep skin feeling soft and hydrated, including:
- Glycerin
- Niacinamide
- Saccharide Isomerate
- Sodium Hyaluronate
Together, these ingredients help cleanse without leaving skin feeling stripped, making bath time a little gentler for sensitive family skin.
Postbiotics in our I-Got-You Cream
Our I-Got-You Cream contains three carefully selected postbiotic ingredients:
- Lactobacillus Ferment Filtrate
- Lactobacillus/Avena Sativa Ferment Extract Filtrate
- Lactobacillus/Undaria Pinnatifida Leaf Ferment Filtrate
These work alongside some of our favourite skin barrier-supporting ingredients, including:
- Three skin-identical ceramides
- Niacinamide
- Cholesterol
- Phytosphingosine
- Glycerin
- Shea Butter
- Jojoba Seed Oil
- Sunflower Seed Oil
Together, they help nourish the skin and support a healthy skin barrier, leaving skin feeling soft, comfortable and cared for.
Why we chose postbiotics for Zojee
When Jonathan and I were developing Zojee, we kept coming back to one question:
"Would we feel confident using this on our own family every single day?"
If the answer wasn't yes, it didn't make it into our formulas.
Postbiotics stood out because they aligned perfectly with what we wanted Zojee to be. Gentle. Thoughtful. Science led.
Rather than chasing trends or relying on a single "hero ingredient", we wanted to create formulas where every ingredient had a purpose. Postbiotics work beautifully alongside ingredients like ceramides, niacinamide and glycerin to help support the skin barrier and microbiome.
For us, that made complete sense.
As parents, we know skincare isn't just about ingredients. It's about the everyday moments, bath time after a messy day, rubbing cream onto little knees before bed, or taking a few minutes to care for your own skin once the house is finally quiet.
Those moments inspired Zojee just as much as the science did.
We created our products to fit naturally into family life, helping make caring for sensitive skin feel a little simpler and a little more reassuring.
A gentle routine goes a long way
Supporting sensitive skin doesn't need to be complicated.
A gentle cleanse followed by regular moisturising can help support the skin barrier and keep skin feeling soft, hydrated and comfortable.
