5 Everyday Things That Can Affect Your Child's Sensitive Skin

If you have a child with sensitive skin, you've probably experienced this before.

Their skin seems calm for a while and you start to think, "Maybe we've finally figured it out."

Then a few days later, a patch of dryness appears, they're scratching more than usual, or their skin just doesn't seem quite as comfortable as it did before.

We've been there too.

There have been many times when our daughter's skin has looked great for weeks, only for a flare up to appear when we least expected it. It used to leave us wondering what we'd done wrong.

Over time, we've learned that sensitive skin is often influenced by lots of small everyday things. Sometimes there is an obvious reason. Sometimes there isn't.

Here are a few things we've found can make a difference.

1. Changes in weather

Weather can have a bigger impact on sensitive skin than many parents realise.

Hot days, cold mornings, wind, heating, air conditioning, and long days outdoors can all affect how skin feels.

We've often noticed changes in our daughter's skin as the seasons change, even when the rest of her routine stays exactly the same.

2. Bath time habits

Bath time is an important part of caring for sensitive skin, but little things can sometimes make a difference.

The temperature of the water, how long your child spends in the bath, and the products you use can all affect how their skin feels afterwards.

That doesn't mean bath time needs to be complicated. In our experience, keeping things gentle and consistent tends to work best.

3. Changes in routine

Travel, holidays, sleepovers, swimming lessons, busy weekends, or even a change in daily schedule can sometimes affect sensitive skin.

When routines change, lots of little things change with them. Different weather, different water, different environments, and sometimes less sleep.

4. The skin barrier

One thing we've learned through our own journey is the importance of the skin barrier.

A healthy skin barrier helps keep moisture in and supports the skin's natural protective function.

When the skin barrier becomes disrupted, skin can sometimes feel drier, more sensitive, or less comfortable than usual.

If you'd like to learn more, we explain this in Probiotics, Postbiotics, and Your Child's Skin Barrier: What Parents Need to Know.

5. The skin microbiome

The skin is home to a community of microorganisms known as the skin microbiome.

It might sound complicated, but it's simply part of the skin's natural ecosystem.

As we've learned more about sensitive skin, we've come to appreciate how important the skin microbiome can be. You can read more about it in What Is the Skin Microbiome and Why It Matters for Sensitive Skin at Every Age.

A few things to keep in mind

One of the biggest lessons we've learned is that sensitive skin is rarely affected by just one thing.

Even now, our daughter still has flare ups from time to time.

The difference is that we no longer expect her skin to be perfect every day.

Instead, we focus on keeping her routine simple, gentle, and consistent, and giving her skin the support it needs when it feels a little more sensitive than usual.

If you’re just starting to understand how all of these everyday factors connect, our gentle guide to sensitive skin in children brings everything together in one place.

It’s completely normal for your child’s skin to look different from one week to the next, and it doesn’t mean you’re doing anything wrong.

Sensitive skin can be unpredictable, and that's something many families experience.
